Kelly Wilson Antiques

6 Feb

Happy Sunday! So in a recent post, I shared that House of Wentworth was featured in CRAVE Dallas! One of the photos they chose to feature in our spread was the precious monogrammed bowl in my daughter’s room. We have had so many inquiries on the piece that I wanted to let you in on the source!

I first met Kelly at Chi Omega Christmas Market in 2009. My little girl, Pearson, was only 6 months old at the time and I was still in “nursery mode”. When I saw Kelly’s beautiful booth, I knew immediately Pearson MUST have a monogrammed Kelly Wilson piece for her room. Pearson’s Room is all white, so choosing a piece was a big decision for me because it would be the only color in the room that was not in the white/cream/champagne color palate. But let me tell you, these pieces were so beautiful, I knew one would add the perfect color spot! Kelly was so patient as I spent WAY too much time perusing her antique china… here is a photo I snapped of my top 5 for P:

How to choose???

I loved them all so much, I considered doing her initials, and even her entire name and hanging them on the wall above her bed! I finally decided that

  1. she was only 6 months old
  2. we have no wall space in our house
  3. her jewelry would be tiny… so the petite turquoise/pink/gold bowl was the ticket!

Here is a photo of the final product I featured in my very first post!

And now, meet the artist of Kelly Wilson Antiques…

HoW: So Kelly, how did you come to find this passion for antiques and creating one of a kind pieces for your clients?

KW: Growing up on Southeast Texas, I really learned to love the “collected life.”  Like many other communities and families, I learned to appreciate that our most precious treasures, were not things we bought at the mall, but those that had a story … something that had been my grandmothers, something a special friend had given us, a sketch done by an artist that was a beloved neighbor.  Things that brought back memories, and ultimately bring warmth to the home because of their story.  My plates are the offspring of this collected spirit … I love the concept of taking something old and once loved by someone else, and adding a personal flourish for another family to enjoy … it gives it a story.

©Kelly Wilson Antiques

HoW: That is lovely! I am a sucker for anything with sentimental value. Tell me more about your creative process…

KW: Every piece is different, and there are actually a couple of layers of customization.  Not only can customers select from a myriad of old plates for the perfect one to compliment their home, but they also can customize it with their own initial.

©Kelly Wilson Antiques

HoW: And about the china selection?

KW: Our inventory consists of unique pieces in most every size and color pattern. But I admit, the hunt to add to the collection is the most fun part! Most pieces are from England and many are more than 100 years old…

©Kelly Wilson Antiques

HoW: What are your favorite tips and tricks for displaying your art?

KW: While the bigger platters make a great personal splash in a room over a doorway, or centered on a mantel, my favorite is a sweet plate set on an easel tucked neatly with some other personal treasures … next to old books, family photos, other collected things … it is like a tiny snapshot in a room, on a single bookshelf, that tells a story about someone.

HoW: Where can our readers view, follow and purchase your beautiful work?

KW:

  • Our Website – Both already monogrammed pieces AND custom pieces to order the letter of your choice are available
  • Forestwood Antique Mall – Dallas customers can also view and purchase from a sampling of the collection at 5333 Forest Lane
  • Our Facebook fan page is a great way to stay in the loop on new pieces added to the collection and sales

HoW: Kelly, thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art with us and for my daughter’s precious bowl! I’m sure I’ll be by to browse for more treasures very soon!

Online Design Magazines

5 Feb

I am still crushed that my all time favorite design magazine, Domino, ceased to be in January of 2009. But lucky for us, there are some fabulous digital magazines filling the void! What I love about these publications is that they give fabulous design tips for every price point and the photos are like eye candy. Not surprising since they were all founded by design bloggers! Here are a few of my favorites…

1. Lonny Mag – to the rescue! Concept of Michelle Adams of M.A. Belle, Lonny Mag released their first online publication with their Oct/Nov 2009 issue and have been going strong ever since…

2. RueCrystal Gentilello of Plush Palate, released Rue’s premier issue in Sept/Oct 2010. They just launched their third issue and it does not disappoint!

3. High GlossPaloma Contreras of La Dolce Vita just released the premier issues 4 days ago! This highly anticipated publication delivers on every level…

I hope you enjoy the latest medium of design delivery! Have a great Saturday night!

CRAVE Dallas

3 Feb

Well, I am absolutely tickled pink (or should I say Pantone honeysuckle) to be included in the first edition of CRAVE Dallas – The Urban Girl’s Manifesto. It is a compilation of over 150 female entrepreneurs in Dallas with businesses that cover the spectrum. The CRAVE Company is making their way through US cities in an effort to support and connect local women to local businesses in an effort to save our neighborhood entrepreneurs. I want to share with you my spread as well as some of my local favorites…

My blogging partner-in-crime, Kelley McCarter Copeland, of The Hidden List

©CRAVE Company

Kelley also has a micro-boutique of vintage goodies called {Stash} located in Julie McCullough Kim‘s IndieGenius

©CRAVE Company

Julie took me on my first trip to Canton Trade Days! What a blast! Anyway, Kelley, Julie and I are hosting a benefit for Dwell with Dignity called {LOVE}LY. We absolutely adore Lisa Robison and Kim Turner and their amazing non-profit…

©CRAVE Company

I was so fortunate to meet the lovely Sabra Girard at a Dwell with Dignity event. The event was hosted by Sabra’s client Serena Cole, owner of Duxiana, who is a DwD sponsor. Sabra’s PR firm is hopping busy with the upcoming Super Bowl and I can’t wait to hear the stories!

©CRAVE Company

So what do you wear to these fun events, you ask? I run over to Indigo1745 last minute and beg Denise Manoy to help! Denise has saved my day on many occasion, including when I was pregnant! I fell in love with her store and her family the first time I went to Bishop Arts

©CRAVE Company

Then I simply throw on as many Farrah B necklaces as I possibly can and I’m done! I did a post on the fabulous Farrah Brothers a while back. Her jewelry is my favorite and it also inspired me to make my jewelry board

©CRAVE CompanyBut when I actually have my act together and can schedule some shopping, I call on my dear friends Amanda and Alicia Barringer of Urban Eve. They bring the boutique to my house so I can throw a party for my girls and we can play while we shop! And if I’m too busy to squeeze in a party (everyone is biting this proverbial apple!), I can call them and have a personal shopping session anytime 😉

When planning my Urban Eve soirée, I’m sure to pull out the GAIA Empowered Women textiles for an extra chic punch! The gorgeous Paula Minnis has created a one-of-a-kind company with an incredible purpose. You can see some of the GAIA products in the post I did on table settings

©CRAVE Company

And don’t forget the flowers for the party! Debby Jewesson‘s Branching Out is the go-to for the final details… she just finished my friend Teresa’s wedding and is on to Chanda’s! She can decorate your event on any budget, big or small… her creativity is the key! She doesn’t know it, but her use of mint julep cups inspired my post on Simple Floral Arrangements!

©CRAVE Company

Last, but certainly not least, is the amazing Jenn Sprinkle. Jenn was the city leader for the CRAVE Dallas guide. She hand-picked every last CRAVE girl featured and we would not have had this opportunity if it weren’t for her. Jenn has several businesses (multi-talented for sure!)… Waxpaper Design House and Jenn Sprinkle Designs.

©CRAVE Company

I just want to thank Jenn for having the vision and faith and helping me along the way! I can’t wait to meet the other CRAVE girls and to keep it local. And for all of you Austin girls… they’re coming to your town next!!!

Happy New Year!

1 Jan

Happy 1.1.11! How cool is that? I have incredible dreams for this year! I can’t wait to find the treasures 2011 holds for all of us. Having a 20-month-old little one, I am constantly reminded how amazing the world is through simple everyday life. So enjoy your big dreams but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses… and groove to the Elmo Slide while you’re at it!

I’m going to leave you with some images of the beautiful Yaupon Hollies across the street. My hands nearly froze while taking these! I mean “Baby, it’s cold outside!
